Upcycling project - Make a bench from a bed

  1. Remove the mattress from your old bed
  2. Deslot your old bed
  3. Remove foot of bed using screwdriver
  4. From the front of the head board measure how deep you want your bench to be. Approximately 430 mm or 17 inches
  5. Using a set square draw a line where you will saw the bed. Repeat on either side of the bed frame
  6. Saw the bed straight, on the lines
  7. Screw two corner braces to the inside of bed frame, positioning to also screw onto the foot of the bed
  8. You can use larger screws to make the bench more solid
  9. Secure the foot of the bed to the bed frame using more corner braces
  10. Your bench should look like this
  11. For the back of the bench you can use the old bed frame
  12. If you prefer you can use the existing bed slats, re-cutting them to make bench slots for your bench. However, you will need to give your slats additional support at the back of the bench by attaching the excess wood from the bed frame
  13. Using an electric sander you can round the corners smooth
  14. Ensure the slats are positioned correctly. Then screw into the wood with an initial screw one inch long. Make sure you are happy with the positioning of the slats and then add second screw to firmly secure the slat.
